I shouted out I loved you but you’re not here, you're not here
| The large tom stretched, his legs reaching as far out as they could to loosen his strong muscles. He yawned widely, his den dim as he shook his pelt and started to groom himself. He padded out into the camp, dawn light starting to brighten the clearing. It was already getting warmer and he flicked his tail, pleased. Greenleaf was his favorite season. With a forest full of prey, the clan always had plenty of food to eat. He headed over to the fresh-kill pile, plucking a vole from the pile by it's tail before heading into the apprentice den. He stepped lightly around the nests to get to Lotuspaw's.
He sat beside her and dropped the vole by her nose, flicking his bushy tail over her face playfully and licking his paw, drawing it over his ear. "Time to wake up, Lotuspaw. Got a job for you today." He planned on taking his younger sister hunting, having not really intereacted with her lately. He missed his siblings. Lotuspaw and Snowbird. Perhaps he'd have a day with her soon. He nudged Lotuspaw, wrapping his thick tail around his paws. |

Safe and warm in her mossy nest, the pale curled her body into a circle. She tucked her nose under a forearm, her hind paws resting lightly against her chin. In her sleep, one of her back paws kicked, pressing the soft pads on her nose for a short time before she rolled over onto her back. Stretching her limbs out, she was lucky the nest in front of her lay empty else she would have woken some grumpy apprentice. Her back paws pressed against the bramble and stick wall of the den, though with barely enough force to move a twig. Her muscles limber and fresh, she pulled her front paws up to her chest, letting the tips of her toes lay on her tummy.
Still between wake and sleep, she hadn't noticed the leader pulling himself into the den. Nor had she noticed him coming up to her nest. The sudden rush of warm scent made the young cat's nose twitch. Smelling blood and fur, she began to stir; eyes bleary as she blinked in the dark den. The sudden fluff of a cat's tail in her face made her sneeze and squirm, but his scent was comforting. Rolling back onto her belly, the apprentice pulled herself up and sat in her nest, gazing down at the piece of fresh kill he'd brought her.
Lotuspaw purred deeply and laid her tail over his. Her belly growled loudly, and it made her ears heat up. Looking shyly up at her brother, she nudged the vole with a paw. "Did you want to share it?" Just having him here with her was special. It felt like the youngest sibling never got to spend time with her family anymore. At least, not with her brother or sister. Snowbird seemed busy lately. Lotuspaw was so proud of her. Even if she didn't get to spend time with the white she-cat, she knew her sister was loyal to her duties as a warrior of ShadowClan. 'Why couldn't I get her as a mentor instead of Galestorm?' And her brother was no different in his duties, save that he also had the task of leading the clan. Eaglestar; she was so lucky to have him as a brother. Maybe it made her look good to the rest of the clan! Excitement buzzed through her, making the energetic cat quiver.

I shouted out I loved you but you’re not here, you're not here
| He purred with amusement, shaking his head. "It is all yours. You'll need your strength for today." The tom really had no special mission for himself and his sister, no border patrols or hunting parties. Today was a day to bond and reconnect. Before being even deputy, Eaglestar had spent as much with his family as he could. But as deputy, he had more responsibility, and less time with his siblings. As leader, even more so. It made him feel bad, so today it was just him and Lotuspaw all to each other. Galestorm could play leader for a day. Eaglestar was taking a break for Lotuspaw.
The tom waited for her to finish eating before flicking his tail. "Come along. We have a lot to today." He says seriously, sounding more leader than brother, and headed out of camp. The rising sun made the shadows stretch and Eaglestar purred softly with pleasure. He kept walking, going nowhere in particular, when he looked at Lotuspaw. "So, how is working with Galestorm?" Eaglestar was curious to see how Lotuspaw was getting on with training. He knew that Galestorm could be a bit strict, but he was hoping his deputy would learn to loosen up a bit, mind his wording, from Lotuspaw. His energetic little sister, however, had much to learn still too from Galestorm, and not just how to hunt and fight.
Without warning, he lunged at Lotuspaw, claws sheathed, and pounced on her gently, springing away nimbly. He sat as he hit the ground, ears angled backward as he licked a paw and drew it over his ear innocently, one golden eye peeking at her, sparkling with mischief, as he waited for her retaliation. Today was about fun! He'd make sure of it. He licked his paw again and swiped it over his ear one final time. |

The apprentice laid a paw over the rodent, pressing down gently on it's hind leg. Her stomach rumbled loudly, and while little Lotuspaw fought to acknowledge it, she couldn't help but gaze down longingly at the prey. She must look like a starving cat, but this was her every day. How many times had she snuck three meals worth of prey from the fresh kill pile when her clanmates weren't looking? Two mice and a lizard made a good breakfast; two pigeons made a good lunch. A long snake for dinner and a squirrel for a pre-sleep snack. It was ridiculous and she knew if she was ever caught eating more than her fair share, she'd be punished. She should be punished. But she was just so hungry all the time. Maybe Eaglestar would take her hunting so she could bring back as much prey as she could carry to make up for it. It felt like all of her free time went toward hunting. Or dodging Galestorm. Sometimes she wished she could just be one of the lazy apprentices for a change. Lay about, listen to the elders, play with the kits. Instead, it seemed she was always either stealing prey from the pile or working her tail off to bring in enough fresh-kill to ease her conscience.
Her brother bid her to eat the vole, and that was all the coaxing she needed. Laying down in her nest with a paw tucked under her, she reached out with the other paw and hooked the critter. Pulling it close, she got to work chowing it down. Had the leader not been sitting beside her, she would have wolfed it down. As it was, she took small, deliberate bites in an attempt to appear like a normal cat. If there was something the small apprentice was afraid of, it was disappointing her family.
Running a paw over her whiskers, she rose and joined her brother when he lead the way out of the den and across the clearing. They'd passed through the camp entrance and out into the forest. The dawn light cast long shadows that seemed to swallow up the two ShadowClan cats as they walked along, side by side. Eaglestar turned to her, and she glanced over with her bright eyes. He inquired her mentor, and she couldn't hold in the groan.
At first, Lotuspaw treated Galestorm with patience and understanding. Something she still works hard to do, but the grouchy cat seemed to know how to get under her fur. Just when she thought she'd get a compliment from the deputy, he'd find some other way to down-play her and make her feel lacking. She knew she wasn't old enough to really worry about it yet, but what if Galestorm somehow messed up her assessment? What if he never let her become a warrior? The idea was silly, and she knew it the moment she let it cross her mind, but it still left a cold worry in her belly. All of this she couldn't really tell her brother though. Galestorm hadn't really done anything wrong exactly. He was just a difficult cat. Lotuspaw flicked her whiskers. "He's fine. I wish he'd smile more sometimes though-OOOUGHH!"
Eaglestar had pounced on her. Reflectively, as he sprung away and sat looking mighty proud of himself, Lotuspaw fluffed up. Her tail, now a plume, lashed behind her. With a pretend growl, she sprang at her brother with her claws safely sheathed. Landing a paw-length away, she turned her body and struck a few teasing blows at his chest and neck, purring loudly while she danced around him.
