He was lying in the apprentice's den, legs stretched out in an attempt to stay cool. It was only morning and the day was already hot, with a warm breeze ruffling his fur. Brackenpaw had slept by the entrance last night, and other apprentices who had waken up early had had to step over his long body. He hoped Foxflame would let him sleep in today, though he doubted it. No mentor ever did. Yesterday had been a hard training session, and his muscles were kind of sore.
Brackenpaw really didn't want to get up. He was already the last one in the den though - Seapaw and Fogpaw were already out. The golden brown apprentice reluctantly clambered up to his paws and gave himself a quick wash, smoothing the patches of fur that had clumped up overnight. He wanted to be outside before Foxflame came looking for him. Cause it's never cool to be last one up, He thought with a roll of his eyes.
After his pelt was passable, Brackenpaw padded out of the den, tail waving lazily, and headed for the fresh-kill pile. He poked around it until he found a plump mouse. He was in the mood to eat with someone - Brackenpaw looked around the camp. Maybe a few apprentices were still out?
He saw a few kits were playing by the nursery, the queens talking and simultaneously watching them. The elders, as usual, were sunning themselves, probably gossiping about the latest shocking development. He imagined himself going over there with this mouse and shuddered. Once they got started on their tales of past exploits (that probably never happened), it was hard to get them to stop.
Brackenpaw's stomach rumbled, and he decided to just eat where he was. Ready to take a bite, his teeth barely poked the mouse when he heard pawsteps drawing near. Oh. Probably Foxflame. He had woken up late, and hoped his mentor wouldn't be too angry about that.

He was crouched, frozen, teeth hovering over the mouse as he waited for Foxflame's rebuke. But there wasn't one - just his mentor's usual lighthearted voice, warm and friendly. "Well good morning there, Brackenpaw. I'm glad to see you're finally awake." Brackenpaw quickly straightened from his mouse and turned around so he faced his mentor, shoulders visibly dropping in relief. Oh. He hadn't known he'd been that nervous. Foxflame never really got mad at Brackenpaw easily (not like other mentors) since he was pretty cool like that, but he had still been embarrassed from waking up late. Luckily for him though, Foxflame seemed ready to overlook that. It had been a tough training session yesterday, after all.
Brackenpaw nodded a greeting in return to his mentor, ears pricked. He kind of felt like doing a border patrol today - maybe they'd meet a ThunderClan or WindClan patrol and something exciting would happen. What exactly, he didn't know. Or care. Just something cool.
"Are you ready for some hunting practice today?" Foxflame continued. Ah, well. It had been a while since they'd been hunting, so Foxflame probably wanted to refresh him on some stuff. Maybe they'd go badger hunting, Brackenpaw thought with a smirk. Now that would be cool. Brackenpaw rose to his paws, forgetting about his mouse. "Yeah, sure," he meowed. "Where are we hunting?" Maybe by a border, he thought hopefully. He rolled his eyes inwardly at himself. On second thought, that was kind of a stupid idea. The last thing ThunderClan needed right now was a border conflict. All the Clans probably hated them for what Littlestar did.
Not wanting to think about that, Brackenpaw turned his attention back to Foxflame. He wondered if his mentor would be teaching him something new today, or if they'd just be going over the basics from his first moon of training.

His paws impatiently kneaded the ground, eager to get started for the day. Brackenpaw was finally starting to feel more awake, and ready to get out the camp and do something. Hunting, battling, border patrol - you name it, he was ready for whatever Foxflame had to throw at him. "...basic hunting....refresher..." Foxflame's words floated through Brackenpaw's ears as he flexed his claws, already thinking of the fat, juicy mice he was going to leap at. "defensive side...slip a bit..." Brackenpaw pricked up his ears. What? This didn't sound like hunting. He stopped flexing his claws and tried to pay attention again, tail twitching in embarassment.
"You're quick on your paws though, so I'm very impressed about that." Though? Though what? What had he missed? "I need to show you a couple of tricks that should help you keep an enemy away from your vital areas." Hey, this sounds interesting! Brackenpaw forgot about rewinding through the conversation and waved his tail eagerly. He wondered if Oakpaw had already learned this stuff. They should spar this afternoon, Brackenpaw could show him what he had learned. Well, what he was about to learn, anyway.
"I take it you have not eaten," Foxflame continued. Brackenpaw followed his mentor's gaze down to the mouse at his paws. Oh, right - he had forgotten about that. "I can't be training you on an empty stomach. Try to get up earlier from now on, or I may have to start waking you up." Brackenpaw ducked his head and nodded, abashed. Now that would be embarrassing - only fresh out of the nursery apprentices had their mentors waking them up. Promising himself not to wake up so late again, Brackenpaw hurried after his mentor, ignoring his rumbling stomach. "Where are we training?" He asked. Sky oak? It had been a while since they were there. Maybe by the twoleg path - they might even run into some twolegs there! Foxflame's defensive moves would definitely come in handy, he thought with a snort.

Brackenpaw padded after his mentor, trying to look nonchalant. It was just an every day training session, after all. It's not like he was a fresh apprentice who got excited about every little thing. But still...battle moves were kind of cool. And when you were hungry, so was hunting. (And hungry he was.) His stomach rumbled at the memory of the mouse and wished he had woken up earlier. The hollow cave in his stomach was all he could think of as Foxflame told him the plans for the day. Squirrels sound pretty good right now, he thought. Actually, when he did think about it, pretty much anything sounded good. Except for frogs and fish. That was just disgusting.
Plus, he was kind of excited for the Sky Oak. It was one of his favorite spots, and the massive tree never failed to impress him. With the abundance of prey this greenleaf, he wouldn't be surprised if he brought back more than just one today. I bet the squirrels will probably fly into my paws, he thought. This should be easy - and fun. He flexed his claws in anticipation, almost missing Foxflame's question. "So far?" He repeated. "The freedom," Brackenpaw said immediately. He shrugged, as if the answer was obvious. And for him, it was. "You get to do things you're not able to as a kit. Like leaving the camp, training, stuff like that." You get more respect, he added silently. No one treats you like a baby anymore when you're an apprentice. Well, not everyone, at least. Brackenpaw didn't want to say that to his mentor, though. He'd just make himself sound like an indignant fluffball. And besides, he didn't really need to complain like that to Foxflame, of all cats - he was one of the few clanmates he felt didn't boss him around because he was an apprentice, which was just one of the reasons he really respected his mentor. "It'll be even better when I'm a warrior," Brackenpaw added. I'll definitely have more freedom then.
Once they arrived at the Sky Oak, Foxflame sat down, and Brackenpaw followed suit. "We will start with hunting, and work from there." Brackenpaw nodded. That made sense. Save the best for last. He tried to stay still and pay attention, though he couldn't help shuffling his paws impatiently when he saw a squirrel in the corner of his vision. He was 100% ready to do some hunting.
