It had been a long morning with her apprentice, and though Echopaw wasn't the kind to chat one's ears off, Adderfrost still wanted a break from being a mentor. She had left her apprentice with some hunting exercises to go over, which should keep her busy enough. Adderfrost slipped out of the camp and into the cool darkness of the evergreen forest, where she was alone. As she silently padded through the underbrush, she wondered where Stoneheart was. The two she-cats were close friends, but after Bramblefang's death, Stoneheart had withdrawn into her shell, turning into an even icier and more reserved cat.
Adderfrost missed talking with her best friend. (Her only friend, really, unless you counted her brother Lionheart.) With Bramblefang's death she had given Stoneheart some space, knowing that's what she herself would want in her friend's place, but was being alone really what she needed right now?
Stoneheart hadn't been in camp, but Adderfrost knew where she might be. Bramblefang always went to the marshes, and she imagined Stoneheart might wander there to grieve. And sure enough, her guess had been right; as her paws squelched through the sticky mud, she caught a glimpse of a dark gray pelt through the cattails. As Adderfrost pushed through the tall leaves, she saw Stoneheart sitting on the ground, head tilted back up at the sky. She was the very picture of loneliness, and Adderfrost knew she must be thinking about Bramblefang.
"Stoneheart?" Adderfrost called out softly. She padded toward her friend, unsure of whether Stoneheart was in the mood for company or not. Adderfrost wasn't the ideal friend in that she knew the right things to say or do. She didn't know how to give soothing comfort, and she couldn't even say how she understood what Stoneheart was going through, because she never had a mate before. But that was fine with her, because what she did know was that Stoneheart didn't care for that sentimental nonsense. Which was good, cause neither did she. Adderfrost made sure to stand a respectful fox-length away from Stoneheart, not wanting to hover around her like a fussy queen. "This was Bramblefang's favorite place, wasn't it?" Adderfrost looked around her, seeing how the sun glinted off the puddles and how the breeze rustled the cattails. It was a pretty enough place, though why it was Bramblefang's favorite was something only Stoneheart knew.

When Adderfrost spoke, she noticed Stoneheart sharply recoil at first, muscles tensing. But once her friend realized who she was, she dropped her hostile expression, merely straightening her back and dipping her head respectfully. "Adderfrost," meowed Stoneheart. The dark gray she-cat nodded and waved her tail, granting her permission. Adderfrost padded over and seated herself, curling her tail over her paws. She settled her yellow gaze on Stoneheart, unsure how her question on Bramblefang would be taken.
"Yes, it was," Stoneheart replied. "He had always loved coming to this very place. Said it was a great spot to just absorb everything. He'd watch the marshes like a hawk. It never made much sense to me." She paused, giving a barely percetible smile before continuing. "I guess it kind of does make sense now. It was Bramblefang's way of closing out the clan to learn who he was on his own." Stoneheart's grey eyes swept over Adderfrost, a blank slate. Her expression was carefully neutral; Adderfrost was unable to read anything into it, be it pain or grief. It was hard to tell whether her query had offended Stoneheart; the slight quiver of her tail was the only give-away that her friend was feeling anything at all. Adderfrost knew Bramblefang was someone who belonged only to Stoneheart's world now, and for her to share a small part of him was something rare. She felt strangely honored, and the last thing Adderfrost wanted to say now was something that would tread on Stoneheart's tail.
"Is it that obvious?" When the gray she-cat glanced at Adderfrost, looking faintly embarrassed for having revealed so much, Adderfrost simply shook her head. "He was important to you." There was nothing further more to explain; things like that were obvious, but there was nothing wrong with that. Adderfrost knew this was where she was supposed to say something comforting ('Oh, Bramblefang is still watching you from StarClan!") but she doubted Stoneheart would appreciate anything of the sort. She felt somewhat awkward, not at all knowing what to say; this was certainly not Adderfrost's area of expertise. Trying to be tactful was something almost completely foreign to her. It was an entirely uncomfortable experience. After a long pause, Adderfrost finally spoke again. "I think I scare my apprentice," she snorted. She wasn't sure if Stoneheart would appreciate the subject change, or if she wanted to keep on talking about Bramblefang; but either way, Adderfrost didn't want to her friend to dwell on something that pained her, that drew her into her closed up shell. "I'm a mean cat." Adderfrost gave an indifferent yawn, smirking. "You seem to work with them better." She was by no means intending to flatter Stoneheart, or the such. But she thought it was funny, how Stoneheart was frosty on the outside, just like her, but managed to find a soft spot for kits and apprentices.

Adderfrost felt a purr rise up in her throat at Stoneheart's joking words. It was rare for the dark she-cat to smile anymore, let alone tease someone, and Adderfrost hoped there would be more moments like this. She never took these kind of things for granted from Stoneheart, especially as neither she-cat laughed readily. It wasn't that Adderfrost wanted a sunny and blindly optimistic Stoneheart bouncing around full of endless chatter. (Adderfrost shuddered at the thought.) But a dark cloud had settled around the gray she-cat since Bramblefang's death, and it was rare for Stoneheart to emerge from it, even for just a moment. Even then, Adderfrost knew Bramblefang would remain in Stoneheart's mind, no matter how forcefully light-hearted she might seem. He had left his mark on her, an infinite imprint that could never drift away. No, this dark cloud wouldn't lift from Stoneheart. Not just yet.
Stoneheart rose to her paws and off the rock, breaking Adderfrost from her train of thought. "What shall we do here?" the dark gray cat suggested. "Perhaps we will catch something to drag back to camp. I suppose we are warriors, we should try to be productive." Adderfrost stood up as well, rolling back her shoulders to relax her stiff muscles. She really should stop worrying over her friend so much; in time, Stoneheart would find a way to heal. It wasn't up to her to fuss about it like a worrisome queen; Stoneheart was a full grown warrior, and was fully capable of managing.
Adderfrost scanned the damp foliage around her, yellow eyes alert and attentive to detail. A bushy tail flashed by her, whipping by a tree - a squirrel. She gave Stoneheart a faint nudge with her shoulder, tilting her head toward the tree. She was sure Stoneheart had seen it too, but just to be true. Something to drag back to camp, she thought. "A squirrel," she murmured. "Want to go for it?" The squirrel was somewhere around the bushes, so perhaps they could flush it out.
