The sky was still a dark blue with night residue, the sun not even visible on the horizon yet. Far off to the east was a faded streak of pink, but that was all that hinted a new day. All the other warriors were still sleeping except for the night watch, absorbed in their dreams of chasing mice. The warrior next to Adderfrost twitched his legs, confirming her musings. Adderfrost snorted and stood up, shaking out the bits of moss stuck in her fur. If Echopaw was having the same dreams, she wouldn't be having them any longer. She planned to start out their first day bright and early.
The tabby and white she-cat padded out of the warrior's den, arching her back and giving a luxuriant stretch. She wondered if the dawn patrol had already left. It was still early in the morning, even for them. Early enough for the air to even be chilly, dew drops still shining on the grass blades. Adderfrost headed over to the apprentice's den. They were still sleeping, of course - dark lumps pressed tight together. She couldn't pick out Echopaw's form, but that didn't matter. "Echopaw!" She called. "I want you out by the freshkill pile within three heartbeats." Not bothering to waste her time with a good morning, Adderfrost headed to the freshkill pile herself. She snagged the nearest piece of prey - a small mouse - and watched the apprentice's den, sitting up straight with her tail curled over her paws. Echopaw better not be the lazy sort of apprentice - no matter what unreasonable hour of the dawn Adderfrost woke her up at.

Echopaw growled as she spotted the creature east of her. It was no doubt the scent of a Thunderclan cat trying to invade Shadowclan's home. She also found Riverclan scent with them as well, as she growled out, "Filthy fox-dungs, what do they hope to achieve with fighting us?!" She took action immediately, dashing at a large tom and raking his back with her claws. She saw the tom go running back to where he belonged, tail between his legs as she moved on to the next cat. This time it was a small she-cat, and she rammed right into her and hissed as the cat went to face her. She didn't know who it was, but they were quick to action as the she-cat was quick and agile, raking her claws over Echopaw before she had a chance to counterattack. The she-cat possessed amazing strength, as she pinned down Echopaw and put her paws over Echopaw's throat. Echopaw gasped for air as she tried to rake her claws over the she-cat's face, but she still continued choking the young apprentice. She had started to grow scared, and tried to rake her hind legs over the she-cat's soft belly. The situation soon grew hopeless, as the surrounding area grew darker every second, the evil grin on her face stuck to her mind as the last thing she heard was, "ECHOPAW!"
The young calico jumped up and gasped in surprised as she wanted to get her bearings back. As her new mentor yelled at her to meet her at the fresh kill pile for their first lesson, Echopaw put her paw over her throat, which seemed perfectly normal. The apprentices around meowed in unhappiness; they hissed in discontent of the noise. She didn't seem to have any difficulty breathing anymore as she got up and gave her morning stretch. It figures that her mentor would wake her up this early, she heard what they said in the nursery before they left, and what they said about Adderfrost wasn't flattering at all. She felt bad for her though, they don't know how she came to being what she was now. And obviously, she was going to experience first-hand what she was like, so she needed a clean slate of her. As long as she hold her tongue and followed her instructions, she wouldn't be a victim to Adderfrost's temper. Echopaw gave herself a little groom, pushing down her fur and flicking any moss still on her as she carefully moved around any apprentices in her way towards the entrance.
There she stood, in front of the fresh kill pile as she said she would. Her slanted yellow eyes watching the den as she walked out to present herself, feeling a bit uncomfortable in her own pelt. She wanted to look downwards, finding her mentor's glare too intense for her. She needed to meet her mentor's gaze all the way, to not show any fear she had only seconds ago in her nightmare. She remembered back to her mother's lessons, giving a little nod to her mentor as she meowed out, "Good morning Adderfrost, what will we be doing today?" She sat down as well, emulating her mentor and flicking her tail over her paws as well, as she waited for her mentor to reply.

The tip of Adderfrost's tail twitched impatiently as she waited for Echopaw to clamber out of the den. This was Echopaw's first day; the ceremony had only been last night, and she was a fresh out of the nursery apprentice. Adderfrost wondered if she was going to be mentoring a fast learner, or one of those blundering fools you had to guide every teeny pawstep of the way.
A small calico cat padded out of the apprentice's den, olive eyes directly meeting Adderfrost's. "Good morning Adderfrost, what will we be doing today?" Her voice was light and friendly, despite the unreasonable hour of the morning. So she knew better than to get on her frosty mentor's bad side. Adderfrost almost wanted to laugh - so I got myself a smart one, she thought, amused. She had expected the worse, of course. The loud-mouthed and obnoxious kind, who always had to get their two cents in. Perhaps that wouldn't be the case this time.
As Echopaw neatly sat down and curled her tail over her paws, mirroring her mentor, Adderfrost's cold yellow gaze evaluated her. The apprentice's eyes were eager and expectant, ready to learn. She was small, but not as tiny as her last apprentice. Slender legs, light frame - this one was built for agility rather than offensive bulk. Adderfrost noted this, taking it all in for later this afternoon. Adderfrost looked at the apprentice, keeping her expression neutral and cool. Perhaps my reputation has already preceded me, Adderfrost mused. Echopaw was clearly determined not to look frightened of her. What's there to be afraid of? I never shout, the warrior thought distastefully. And I never lose my temper. Everything I say is deliberate. But she secretly was pleased to be thought of as scary. It was very nice.
"We'll find out, won't we?" Adderfrost replied calmly. She lifted a paw disdainfully and nudged the mouse over to her apprentice. "Here. Take this to the elders first. And don't wake them up!" she added. "StarClan knows what mood that'll put them in. Just leave it in front of their den." Without waiting for Echopaw to even take the mouse, she went ahead and stood up. Turning away, she padded towards the camp entrance. "Now come along. We'll catch breakfast later." She knew the Echopaw must be hungry, but apprentices were always tougher than you thought. She'll survive. Adderfrost hadn't eaten herself, but she had been taught to control her hunger, and planned for Echopaw to learn the same.

Once she had greeted her mentor, she used her frosty yellow eyes on Echopaw and it made her uncomfortable. In truth, all cats who look at Echopaw make her nervous and during those situations she felt like she wanted to turn invisible and run. This would happen often when Cricketpaw and her would get in trouble for their mischievous tricks they would pull on others, and the judgmental look on the other queens made her heart beat as fast as a Dove's wing trying to escape a predator. She wasn't like her sister, she really cared about what others think of her, so she was going to prove those chattering queens wrong about her. They couldn't lecture her mother about having troublesome kits, because she was going to be a good warrior. But in order to do that, she needed to follow her mentor's advice. Even if it did seem unreasonably early.
Adderfrost finally spoke once her evaluation was over, answering Echopaw's question with another question. She made the whole day schedule mysterious, making Echopaw excited and nervous at the same time. She was finally an apprentice, her and her siblings were waiting for this day for a long time. She wasn't going to waste any second of it playing around, and was going to be quick to action. She was going to practice every lesson by herself, and if she could convince Cricketpaw she could use her to help learn the skills faster. She'll have to trust her mentor and follow all of her directions without blinking an eye.
A mouse was thrown in her direction as Adderfrost ordered her to take it to the elders and don't wake them. She was going to get an earful if she woke them, as she already knew the consequence of waking elders when they sleep. She took the mouse and felt how it was in her jaws, it was a very pitiful mouse and the elders might complain later on. She probably get in trouble, and get another earful about her and how she needs to take care of her elders better. But she'll probably bring something bigger for them to eat so they don't chew her head off. Even if she was starving, her mother and father told her that before anyone else eats, elders and kits must be taken cared of first. It was part of the warrior code, and she had to abide by it.
Echopaw turned and follow her mentor, who was already heading out towards the exit. She padded a little behind her, keeping some space between the two to keep both felines comfortable. Her mentor said that they were going to catch breakfast later, and while Echopaw was hesitate she asked, "What are we going to do now though?" The trees were starting to thicken as she followed her mentor deeper into the woods.

Adderfrost was already swiftly padding out of the camp by the time she heard tiny pawsteps scampering after her. She rolled her eyes. Oh, right. It had been a while since her last apprentice, and had forgotten that they took smaller steps than full grown warriors. Adderfrost slowed her pace a little more so Echopaw wouldn't be out of breath. The calico she-cat made sure to maintain a respectful distance behind Adderfrost, thankfully. She despised it when apprentices always charged ahead. Usually ended up with them thundering into a thicket of brambles and their mentor having to pull them out. For a while her apprentice was silent as they padded through the winding forest, the only sounds being soft pawsteps upon the pine needles and the ocassional bird song. She was surprised that the apprentice hadn't said anything so far.
"What are we going to do now though?" Echopaw asked suddenly. Well, it was only a matter of time, thought Adderfrost dryly. She actually had them heading toward the ThunderClan border, which they weren't far from now. Of course, the apprentice wouldn't have any idea where they are. "Taste the air," Adderfrost ordered. "And tell me where you think we are." They had finally arrived at the border, where the strong reek of ThunderClan mingled with ShadowClan's familiar scent. Echopaw had never smelled ThunderClan, nor RiverClan before, so she would be taking a random guess. Unless she used her brain for some deductive reasoning. As she waited for Echopaw to taste the air, Adderfrost watched the trees across the border warily, ears pricked for the faintest whisper of fur.

Echopaw was glad that her mentor slowed down for her. Maybe what the queens said about her was all lies. She wouldn't be surprised though, this wasn't the first time they lied. She didn't realize this becaise she was lost in thought, but the area started to thin with less brambles and trees to provide shade. In fact, the once dark place was replaced with a clearing ahead, and with it a thick musk of something other then Shadowclan presented itself. Echopaw scrunched her nose up as she scented it, and even before her mentor told her to taste the air she could already smell it. She had been this far from home, from the securing brambles and towering trees to this desolate place she was now in. It was a bit scary to her, but she couldn't help but feel... almost alive by this. Echopaw thought, ' This is what it's like to be a warrior huh?' Her mentor made her guess where she was, maybe testing her intelligence. She hasn't been outside before, but even she knew that it could either be Riverclan or Thunderclan. Windclan's borders were far from them. She couldn't really trust her nose, so she had to trust her mind and eyes. She already noticed how bare the place was. She also saw from far away a black river, and she was shocked that a river could actually turn that dark. She thought wide-eyed, ' How is it even possible!? is it safe to even drink from there!?' Nevertheless, she didn't ask her mentor, otherwise she might look like a fool. She thought that this may be Riverclan territory, but she thought back to what her mother and father said. Wouldn't Riverclan have multiple rivers running through their territory like their father once told him? She needed to inspect the grounds more. "Excuse me Adderfrost," she said as she move past her mentor and went to the black river. It was rather thin, and the water wasn't flowing in any direction. It seemed that it was frozen completely. She smelled the foreign scent get stronger, but Shadowclan's scent was still there, reassuring Echopaw that she was still in her right. She gave the river a little touch, making sure she didn't fall in and drown. But as soon as she touched it she met something solid. It was hard under her paws unlike the soft grass and it seemed that it wasn't water at all. In fact, it wasn't even a river. Echopaw felt her pelt grow hot with embarrassment as she returned back to her mentor. A river, what was she thinking?! Though she narrowed it down, it was Riverclan because she couldn't see any rivers in the next territory. She mewed to her mentor, "Is it Thunderclan territory?" She certainly hoped that she was right, she would be embarrass if she got it wrong. (OOC: I hope this is right, the path is between the two borders and the forest clearing is between the two, so I started to describe that) TAGGED: adderfrost

The tiny apprentice was sniffing the air apprehensively, scrunching her nose as the strong odor of musk overwhelmed her. ThunderClan for you, Adderfrost thought with a snort. She watched her apprentice with her usual cool gaze, yellow eyes taking everything in. When her apprentice moved forward ("Excuse me, Adderfrost") Adderfrost's gaze followed her curiously.
Echopaw stopped at the twoleg path and patted it with a paw. Her expression was deeply serious as she stared hard at the path, giving it an inspecting sniff. Adderfrost's whiskers twitched at Echopaw's solemn inspection. She had no idea what the apprentice was doing, but she might as well humor her. Adderfrost made no commentary, waiting instead to see what Echopaw would say.
The calico she-cat finally turned toward Adderfrost. "Is it Thunderclan territory?" Adderfrost didn't know how Echopaw had arrived at this conclusion, whether through process of elimination, a random guess, or some intuitive knowledge, but she'd have time to figure out her apprentice's thought process later. "It is," Adderfrost simply replied. She tilted her head slightly, motioning for Echopaw to come back. She fixed her eyes on the apprentice, cold and serious. "We're not at war with them. Not yet. But things could very possibly go that way." Adderfrost let her eyes drill into Echopaw's for a heartbeat longer, then turned away. It was a warning that could be taken in multiple ways. Not to go by the border alone in the future, or not to mess with ThunderClan and provoke any of them; to not even bother making friends with any of their apprentices. She'd let Echopaw interpret that however she wished.
Adderfrost began padding away, waving her tail for Echopaw to follow. We haven't got all day, now. She headed towards the RiverClan border, silently moving through the forest. She didn't bother looking back to see if Echopaw was following her, relying on her apprentice's obedience. There was a line of bushes bordering the thunderpath; when you looked through them and across the black strip, you could see willow trees and cattails. "There, across the thunderpath - that's RiverClan." Adderfrost jerked her head, gesturing towards their territory. The cowards, she thought coldly. The last gathering hadn't been forgotten among ShadowClan - far from it. "Don't even bother talking with them if you see one," she said, voice chilly with disdain. "Remember their scent; learn how to recognize it within a heartbeat." You'll need to in battle, she added silently in her mind. But there was no need to scare the apprentice just yet.
TAGGED: Echopaw(ooc:) i think that's right, we'll just go with it - i get confused with the borders myself

She saw from the corner of her eye her mentor as Echopaw was inspecting the black river. She didn't say anything, but she felt her sharp yellow eyes watching her. Once she told her what the other clan might be, Adderfrost simply told her it was. Echopaw purred as a congratulations as a job well done to herself, as her mentor led them back to their previous place. Echopaw listened in as her mentor told her that they weren't at war with them, but something could happen that would make it otherwise. Echopaw flicked her ears as she heard this. Adderfrost turned to walk away but Echopaw gave a one last glance at the territory. She knew the warrior code well, because her parents, the queens, and elders have been drilling it in her head ever since she could open her eyes. She whsipered to herself, "Defend your Clan, even with your life. You may have friendships with cats from other Clans, but your loyalty must remain to your Clan, as one day you may meet them in battle. How stupid. I know my family comes before a feline in Thunderclan." She snorted and ran after Adderfrost. It was mid-day by the time they got to Riverclan territory. The hot, summer sun was beating down on both cats as they stopped behind a line of bushes. Echopaw felt terrible: her paws ached from the walking, her stomach felt like it was about to cave into itself, and the sun wasn't helping the dryness of her throat. But she remained humble and silent about her needs. She no longer was a kit, therefore she had to care for the elders, kits, and queens before her now. The clan took care to make sure she survived and was fed well. Now, the least she could do was make sure that the others were fed before she could even lay a paw on a piece of prey. Plus, when leaf-bare comes she would have to go without food for some time when prey was gone, so in a way this would make it seem this is what Adeerfrost is trying to teach her. They could of easily ate something before they left. Echopaw figured that this was what she was doing. Plus, Adderfrost didn't eat anything when she left, so she must be hungry as well. Echopaw couldn't be selfish when Adderfrost was taking the time to show her around, in fact, be her mentor. She could have simple denied being her mentor, but she didn't. So echopaw wasn't going to be rude to Adderfrost. So she was going to keep her mouth shut. Instead, she paid attention to what Adderfrost presented to her. It was another black river, or another black ground as Adderfrost told her opposite to the thunderpath was Riverclan's territory. Echopaw stared in awe as she finally was told that the black ground was a thunderpath. 'How could I be so stupid?!' she thought to herself as she remembered her father telling her about it a few times. How she suppose to know what it looked like though? Nevertheless, she scented the air for Riverclan's scent, the scent much softer then Thunderclan's, maybe even Shadowclan's. Echopaw probably assumed that it was because they swimmed a lot, thus why they're scent wasn't as musky. Once she figured the scent, she nodded to her mentor. She knew Shadowclan and Riverclan weren't on good terms, she just didn't know why. She mewed to her mentor, "Why are we fighting with Riverclan?" TAGGED: adderfrost

Adderfrost stared across the thunderpath and into the willow trees of RiverClan territory, yellow eyes narrowed and cold. They were probably flopping around at camp with their round bellies full of fish, soaking in the summer sun. The self-absorbed creatures. She remembered them swarming off the island at the first sign of conflict, as if they had a built in radar to anything that might harm them. If it came to war, whose side would they be on? They didn't seem to care about Ospreystar's death, or about the vicious and hostile relations between ThunderClan and WindClan. Did they even have the slightest clue that this...peace in the forest could snap any moment?
The she-cat was so absorbed in her thoughts that she almost failed to hear her apprentice's query. Adderfrost glanced down at Echopaw, not surprised by the question. Apprentices always wanted to know the why behind everything. It wasn't necessarily a bad thing though - wanting to be informed was hardly a crime. Adderfrost rolled several replies in her mind, wondering which one would be most suitable. "I wouldn't put it like that just yet," she finally said. "But it could get there." Realizing she didn't answer the question, she added on to her answer. "They're cowards, and ShadowClan has never liked cowards." Leave the horror of Littlestar for someone else to explain. It wasn't that she thought Echopaw would be scared, or unable to understand; in fact, she had the impression that her apprentice was rather clever. But this was a subject better left for another time.
Besides, there was no time to waste on chatting. They had covered all the borders today and should get started on the actual learning. Adderfrost turned to face her apprentice. "Are you hungry?" The question wasn't a gentle inquiry on Echopaw's well-being; it was phrased like a cool comment on the weather, a no-nonsense query for information. But the apprentice didn't even need to answer - the rumbling in her stomach revealed all. Adderfrost resisted twitching a whisker. "Sounds like you are." She began padding back into the shadows of their territory, and into the welcome shade of the trees. Once she was at the foot of a pine tree, she tasted the air. There was a mouse - and it was very close, too. "Tell me; is there anything is this area you can eat?" She meowed, a silently worded instruction to taste the air. There was an empty cave in her stomach, but she ignored the feeling, thankful for its silence. The last thing she wanted was for her apprentice to hear her own hunger.

All while Echopaw learned the Riverclan scent, she saw from the corner of her eyes the sharp way her mentor looked at Riverclan's territory. It sent chills to her spine as Adderfrost uttered that Shadowclan didn't like cowards. But she learned they weren't in battle with them, yet. Though Echopaw found the answer pretty odd with the answer given. Felling a bit too bold(Cricketpaw was getting to her) she mewed, "I've heard about wars over prey and territory, but not over cowardliness," she padded to her mentor, "Though how is Riverclan being a coward any threat to us? In the way you make it sound, it seems that riverclanners are a bunch of pushovers filled with kittypets. Cowards won't try to invade Shadowclan territory, so what gives?" Echopaw thought that her mentor was being quite around the bush with her. If any horror story was told by any one, she would prefer it to be Adderfrost who did it. In the short time they've been together Echopaw made her out to be a cat with a sharp, but truthful tongue. She knew she would have to learn the horrors of the warrior world soon. Kits from the clan are born into a bubble of innocence before thrown into a world of chaos, and Echopaw knew after seeing warriors come in injured or hurt that she would have to accept it soon. But if her mentor didn't feel like it, then she was going to shut her mouth once more.
Adderfrost turned to her, which Echopaw thought that she was in trouble, but Adderfrost asked if she was hungry. Echopaw was going to reply when her body already did it for her, a low rumbling in her stomach responded to Adderfrost question. Echopaw felt her ears burn with embarrassment as Adderfrost commented that it sounded like she was. She followed her mentor in silence as Adderfrost led them back into their own territory where Echopaw inhaled the sweet scent of her home. There, they were protected from the sun by the branches of the trees covering them and the bright light. She followed her some more into they were at the roots of a great pine tree, where Adderfrost scented the air. Adderfrost asked if their was anything they could it. Echopaw took a deep inhale as she tried to gather information. Her stomach went wild as she scented a mouse nearby. Her mouth salivated as she tried to gain composer of herself. "It's a mouse Adderfrost." She remembered the scent from back when they started to wean from their mother's milk, along with eating honey. She remembered her first real taste of it and reliving her first bite made it harder for her to focus. Echopaw mentally hit herself as she thought, 'Get a hold of yourself, you're absolutely pathetic if this is what a few hours does to you!'
Echopaw then realized that it won't even go to her first if she even caught it, her clan came first and she needed to focus on it's location. She scented it east of where they were, not too far away. She heard little rustling in the bushes, where she figured the mouse may be hiding. She whispered to her mentor, "I think it's in the bushes, what do I do now?"

The older warrior's ears swiveled sharply as she tried to locate the mouse herself. Just as she pinpointed it in the underbrush, Echopaw announced the location herself. "I think it's in the bushes, what do I do now?" Adderfrost sharply gestured toward the bush with her head. What else is there to do? "What do you think?" She said, her voice condescending. "Hunt it. That's your breakfast." Better not dawdle - only dead mice don't run away. But she kept her dry thoughts to herself, merely watching Echopaw with her usual cold eyes. She didn't elaborate on her instructions, leaving her apprentice to flounder for herself with just those few words. Figure it out. You're a smart apprentice, aren't you? So Echopaw wouldn't waste any more time waiting for advice, Adderfrost sat down to further enunciate her point. I'm not helping you - not for now. She neatly curled her tail over her paws, back straight as she calmly gazed at Echopaw.
Adderfrost knew her teaching could be...frustrating, perhaps even deliberately so. But she didn't intend to leave Echopaw flailing for herself as she hopped after her breakfast - one simply learned more through trying it out themselves. After they failed their first time, she would then step in and show them what went wrong. And if Echopaw succeeded - well there was always room for improvement, wasn't there? Some cats in the Clan thought Adderfrost's method of teaching unnecessarily difficult, but she likened it to a mother bird throwing her chicks out of the nest. Let's see if you'll fly, Echopaw.
As the apprentice tried to figure out what to do with her vague instructions, Adderfrost's thoughts drifted back to the RiverClan border, and her apprentice's questions. She had ignored them, prioritizing Echopaw's hunger over her curiosity. But - she'd admit this to herself - she did admire Echopaw's persistence in knowing the truth, despite the risk of a rebuke from her mentor. Another small part of why she had initially ignored the questions was because she didn't know how to answer. And not because she was an empty-headed mousebrain - as she tried to form an answer in her mind, she realized that the anger the two Clans felt toward each other was over something petty. Over a small matter of pride. The truth didn't bother Adderfrost, But she'd have to be careful in explaining this without making ShadowClan sound childish. I'll tell her after she catches the mouse, she decided. Better to keep her focused for now, without distracting her with politics.

Echopaw felt completely panicked when Adderfrost told her to hunt her prey, that it was going to be her breakfast. She felt the fur on her neck rise as she widen her eyes at her mentor. They haven't even practiced any of the proper forms in order for her to start! For Adderfrost to do this, it was like she was sending Echopaw in battlefield blind! Echopaw couldn't complain though, as she stood there gaping at her mentor, the mouse could be getting away, and by now she was sure they would alert it of their position soon. She gave her mentor one last look as she saw her wrap her tail around her body, her eyes telling Echopaw all. Echopaw was hungry, and soon that drive to eat took over the need to understand what she was doing.
Instead, she depended on her skills she learned before when she was a kit. Every kit knew about the hunter's crouch, 'let's start with that,' she thought as she got into hunter's position, hindquarters in the air and front as close to the ground as possible. Once she deemed herself worthy, she scented the air once more in order to see if the mouse was still in the bush. As soon as she did that, her prize came out from under it, squeaking and chattering about. Echopaw felt the hunger in her stomach intensify as her eyes dilated. Echopaw figured that since it came from the bushes, then it's den must be in there, so she would have to separate it from their.
She unsheathe her claws as she slowly crawled towards it, the blood pounding in her ears blocking out any other sound. Right now, it was just her and the mouse. That's all she needed to know. Once the mouse perked his head up, Echopaw knew she had to take advantage of the situation, so she charged at it. The mouse heard the little apprentice and started to scamper away into the bushes, but she blocked it's way to the den and clawed at it. The mouse gave a scream in pain as Echopaw caught it's leg, though not deep at all. She lunged at the small mouse, and it took that moment to scurry between her legs and right back into the bushes. Echopaw hissed in annoyance as she followed tail and dive into the bush in order to try to get her prize in a last effort. She was completely blind in the bush, she flailed about in the bush and dug her claws to the ground, until she heard something squeak in her right paw. She quickly applied pressure to it and set her teeth down on the little scrap of fur. It was completely berserk and started to move almost anywhere in order to get away from it's impending doom, but the weight of her paw and the unforgiving jaws meant certain death. Eventually it gave in and Echopaw let go as she stared down at the kill.
Echopaw stared down at what she saw as she tried to think what had happen. She also noticed that her legs dangled outside of the bush, she situated herself before grabbing her limp kill in her mouth as she poked her head out of the bush with prize at jaw. A little purr came out of her throat as she climbed out of the bushes and went up to her mentor, dropping her first ever kill in front of her feet. Echopaw felt leaves sticking out of her fur and was proven to her by one gently falling on her muzzle. But she quickly shook herself from the grip and mewed in happiness.

Adderfrost watched Echopaw scrabble through the bushes for the mouse, limbs flailing all over the place. Throughout it all she didn't move, only her eyes moving as they followed the blur of calico. What a messy kill. She tilted her head back in disdain. Messy, not to mention the energy she wasted just struggling in the bushes. When Echopaw finally trotted out from the underbrush with the mouse in her mouth, fur sticking up in clumps and leaves clinging to her pelt, Adderfrost almost rolled her eyes. But she resisted. She was feeling nice today.
She gave the mouse an appraising look. One of its legs was ripped and bleeding a little, though not a lot. Messy, she thought to herself again. Still, it had been Echopaw's first try. She couldn't expect much. She did end up catching it. Better than some apprentices. Adderfrost felt a small blossom of pride. Could Galestorm claim Lotuspaw had been successful with her first try? She didn't think so. Clumsy catch or not, she knew she hadn't even shown Echopaw the first thing about hunting, so - not bad. Not bad at all. Of course, her apprentice still had a long way to go before she'd be presentable for an actual hunting patrol.
Adderfrost extended a paw and nudged the mouse. "What's this?" She meowed. "I'll catch my own. You might as well do something about that stomach of yours." That's right, go on. Eat it. I won't claw your ear off for having your breakfast.
She skipped praising the apprentice for her first catch - it spoke for itself. Instead, she decided to cut right to the chase. "Messy, messy technique." Adderfrost enunciated each 'messy,' shaking her head coldly. "Your legs were all over the place. Did you even know what you were doing with your tail?" And don't answer that, cause it didn't look like it. "You make it look like hunting's a physical struggle for you." There was so much more criticism she could throw out, but that wouldn't be necessary for now. She didn't want to crush the furball's spirit on the first day.
"You need to make hunting look easy. You're a cat, not a bumbling dog." Adderfrost stood up in a single fluid movement, eyes flicking over Echopaw. "That said, hunting with an empty belly is never the same as hunting with a full one. When you're hungry, finesse would matter less, it seems."
"But that's the way of a rogue, not a warrior. Always have control over your legs. And your tail," she added with a sniff. "When you chased the mouse into the bushes - it looked like you completely lost your head!" Adderfrost frowned with disgust. "Three quarters of that chase was unnecessary, wasted energy. When you're starving in leaf bare, you can't afford to throw all your energy into a single mouse. There are other bellies in the Clan, and you need to conserve your breath for more than just one catch." She was tired of talking. Speeches weren't her thing. "Tell me, what went wrong with your hunt?" She prompted. When Echopaw was creeping toward the mouse, she hadn't been holding her tail straight and still - it was only slight, but the motion had stirred a shadow, alerting the mouse. Perhaps the apprentice would be able to recall what went wrong, or perhaps the detail would be too small for her to remember.
