[presto] words450 museDecent notesFor battle training, feel free to power-play Blacktail. taggedQuietpaw[/presto] Blacktail ● Deputy of RiverClan ● prose | dialog ● As far as hot days go, today had to be a record in RiverClan. The prey were hiding in their burrows, fish were keeping to deeper water where it was cooler, and even the birds seemed stressed. Fluttering about, keeping quiet; it was eerie. The lake territories could use a good downpour, though from the sounds of it, a storm was brewing. The thunder was far off, maybe in ThunderClan or WindClan? Hopefully it would come this way. The rain would feel so good right now. The air felt unusually dry and in the case of the deputy, it made his throat hurt.
He strolled into the camp, feeling good about himself, despite the heat. In his jaws dangled a small turtle and three frogs. All caught while stuck in the mud. It was messy, and some mud still stuck to his belly and legs, but well worth his time. It was awkward, holding onto them practically by their toes, as he stepped up to the fresh kill pile and dropped the dangling prey on top. Before backing away, he bent and picked one of the green frogs back up, and padded over to a quiet place out of the sun.
Keeping his eye on the happenings of the cats around him, Blacktail got to work on his meal. He busied himself with the sweet meat of the legs while warriors left camp with their apprentices in toe. It reminded him that he'd recently taken up his second apprentice. He'd been neglecting little Quietpaw, leaving her under the care of the other warriors. Since the incident following the last gathering, he had taken it upon himself to patrol the vast inlets and banks of the RiverClan territory. Feeling guilty now, the cat quickly finished his lunch. The crunch of the bones still on his mind, he cleaned his face and paws and stood.
Still licking his chops, the tom walked across the clearing and poked his head into the apprentice's den. Seeing a few sleeping bodies, resting away from the heat of sun-high, the cat left them in peace. He recognized the shapes, and knew them to be the cats he'd sent along with their mentors on the dawn patrol and hunting teams. It was good they were able to get some shut eye. But that didn't explain where his own apprentice was.
He thought back; had he sent her along with another warrior? He didn't think so. So where was she? He scanned across the island a few quick moments before his voice rang out, "Quietpaw? Quietpaw!" Not wanting to go traipsing about the marshes, he sat by the apprentice's den to wait for any sight of the she-cat.

[presto] words541 museLet it flow! taggedQuietpaw[/presto] Blacktail ● Deputy of RiverClan ● prose | dialog ● A brief squabble over by the nursery pulled the deputy's attention for a time. A few kits were squeaking; crawling over each other. The tom cat watched, careful to keep his mask up this time. He didn't need a repeat of the small clan gathering when both Quietpaw and Wolfeye saw him and all his doubts. He felt a stab of regret, knowing it wasn't fair how he'd snapped at the gray warrior. It was just so.. Embarrassing. A poor excuse, and one he felt guilty about.
Blacktail's thoughts brought him to Redstorm. The loner had returned, and now he hunted with his birth clan again. The deputy wondered where he was right that moment. Perhaps he was out with his brother again. The tom was happy to see him merging in with every-day life, but something still nagged his mind. Guilt welled up again. 'Oh get over yourself, Blacktail. You're a warrior, not a kit.' Geckostar made him deputy; he wouldn't just take it away from him in favor of his brother's return. He had worked hard to earn favor in the clan, and to show he was up to the task of assigning patrols and acting as second-in-command under the leader. He liked how important he felt, and he surged with pride at the idea that other cats trusted him. But there was another dark part of his mind that wanted more. To become leader to your clan is a great feat, and the respect he felt now as deputy would be nothing compared to the fame he'd receive as Blackstar. But to step up, it would mean that the current leader had to step down, or die. Try as he might to give into kithood fantasies about ruling RiverClan, the lake would miss Geckostar. He would be lost without him. It was a sobering thought, and maybe he'd be happiest to rule as deputy and join the elder's den one day without taking a 'star name, instead of having to come to terms with losing his leader.
Hearing the faint patter of paw-falls made him realize he'd been staring at the nursery. Blinking, he turned his pale green gaze sideways to see the pretty apprentice making her way up to him. He nodded his head once when she sat by him. "I was. How would you like to get your paws wet? Come." He stood, flicked his tail toward the exit, and padded off.
As he left the island, he kept his pace slow enough for Quietpaw to keep up while still clearing the distance to the Meadowlands. The river was a tempting idea, but it ran too quickly for a new apprentice. He didn't want her to lose her footing and take a stumble under the water. RiverClan or not, they weren't fish; they could drown. Even though other clans liked to joke that RiverClan cats had gills secretly hidden behind their ears.
Despite himself, Blacktail flashed a smile. As he neared a small stream, he slowed and turned his body sideways. The sun scorched overhead, and with the trickle of water echoing in his ears, it took all his self-control not to roll about in the stream while he waited for his apprentice to join him.

[presto] words285 muse.. I want to go swimming. Is it obvious? taggedQuietpaw[/presto] Blacktail ● Deputy of RiverClan ● prose | dialog ● With his body sideways to the stream, his triangular ears picked up the trickle of the water running over the rocky bed. He turned his gaze downward, enjoying the brightly colored stones and how they reflected with the layer of fast moving water; sparkling under the sunlight. The sound was pleasing, and he nearly closed his eyes in a dreamy way when he remembered himself and turned his head toward his apprentice.
Trying to keep his voice even, though being so close to the cool waters of the stream added a little bounce to his mood, he nodded once to her. "I chose this place because the water isn't as fast or deep as the river. It should be easier to keep your paws under you this way." He placed his paw into the water, stepping across the shallows with the grace of a RiverClan cat. His tail held just above the water line looked like a long, black, furry snake behind him. He flicked his ear, welcoming her to join him in the stream.
There was obvious pride in the tone of his voice as he spoke clearly over the trickle of water around him. "Now then. Quietpaw, do you know what sets RiverClan above the other three clans?" While he waited for her, he allowed his legs to bend just enough for the water to reach his belly fur. With her height, she should have no problem standing normally with the water up to her chest. He crouched there, enjoying the cool water against his legs and stomach. How he wished he wasn't here on business. The tom wanted so dearly just to dive under the water and lay there like a fish.

[presto] words429 museGood! taggedQuietpaw[/presto] Blacktail ● Deputy of RiverClan ● prose | dialog ● Blacktail pushed down the urge to purr along with Quietpaw. Looking down at the small cat in the water with him, he waited patiently while she thought on his question. Seeing her concentrating like that made his whisker's twitch. It wasn't with aggravation, more over he was intensely pleased and trying not to pop a dopey grin. Like his former apprentice, Wolfeye, this new apprentice was keen. Wolfeye only lacked in the confidence to back up her answers and the self-esteem to know how important she was in the clan. So far, as he watched her, Quietpaw didn't seem to lack the apparent flaws of a young Wolfeye. Of course, he still had to wait for her answer to know just what sort of cat he was dealing with.
After she gave her answer, he offered two short nods. "Correct on both accounts. I've heard that you're already a good hunter, but I'll see that for myself another day." He straightened his legs, pulling himself up to his full height. The large tom continued with his lesson, "today I aim to show you the water-based techniques you can call on in battle. We share much of the other clan's moves on land, but in the water, we reign supreme. Later I'll show you ground attacks. Let's start off easy. First up," he pulled a forepaw from the water and turned his body just enough so she wouldn't be caught in too much of the blow-back, smacked it down. A decent-sized splash filled the air with water, it's noise sending some little rodent squeaking back to it's den. He glanced over his shoulder at the rodent, but didn't give it much thought.
Looking back at his apprentice, he set his paw back down comfortably. "One of the simplest tactics RiverClan has, but also one of the most useful. It's simplicity allows any cat to do it, and do it well. Another version is this." He turned around, trying to keep her in full view of his front, but not wanting to hit her with the spray. Pulling both of his front paws out of the water, he brought them back down with a sounding wave of water. "And," he swept his tail forward, creating an arch of water. "These three, when used correctly, can blind and temporarily disorient other cats. If you're offering aid to one of your clanmates who is already fighting, a loud splash like that can offer a good distraction as well." He moved away from her, giving her space. "Go on, Quietpaw. Let's see you try."

[presto] words228 museDecent taggedQuietpaw[/presto] Blacktail ● Deputy of RiverClan ● prose | dialog ● He watched the small cat bring up her paw and slap it down with a splash. "Not bad. Try lifting your paw up higher. Don't put so much pressure on your shoulder, or you could wretch it." He rose his own paw, holding it so she could see how he kept his shoulder straight, and brought it down. This time, he turned his paw sideways just long enough that when it hit the water, it controlled most of the splash outward. "As you can see, you can aim the spray toward the face of the enemy. Though the best way to aim is to use your tail." He stepped back again. "Go ahead and try out the second move now."
As she pulled herself up high, he swept his eyes over her form, analyzing how she held herself. Her balance was great, her spine was straight, everything was perfect. He nodded in the short time she was airborne. However, when she stumbled and fell, he rushed forward to help. His nose vanished below the water's surface, ready to grab her scruff, when her head came up on it's own. Thankfully, the shallow water helped keep the small cat safe. The mentor backed away again, watching her scrabble back up on her paws. Through her sputtered appology, the deputy lifted a brow. "It's fine, Quietpaw. Did you hurt anything?"

Though he didn't offer her any help, there was concern in his eyes for his new apprentice. Her embarrassment wasn't lost on him; a cat would have to be blind not to see how uncomfortable she was with her mistake. Even so, making mistakes was something every cat does from time to time. He didn't try to soothe her worries, instead he stood up straighter and looked down upon her with consideration.
She was moving about, perhaps feeling around the stream bed for more loose rocks. The deputy allowed his apprentice a few moments to catch her breath and find her footing before he nodded once. "Go ahead and try again. Remember, bring yourself up to your full height, and keep your back straight." He backed up a few steps, ready to access her.
The mentor had plans working in his mind. Her enthusiasm for being in the water was certainly a good thing, as he had many other defensive moves he wanted to show her that day. Including a few offensive tactics to turn the battle in her favor one day. Hopefully, if she didn't hurt herself, they could even get in some water battle practice to try out what she will learn once she masters the basic splashes. Every RiverClan cat had to know how to move about in the water as though they were more fish than cats. ThunderClan may have their trees, and ShadowClan; their shadows, but RiverClan had the aid of the lake itself.
