● prose | dialog | words: 539 | tagged: see below! ● NOTICE! :: Because only Geckostar and Blacktail signed up for the patrol, I'm going to open this thread to last-second additions. The cats that are eligible to take part in the June hunting patrol are: Wolfeye, Redstorm, Smallcloud, and Quietpaw *with Smallcloud*. To take part in this thread, send me a message and if we have room in the roster, I'll add your name to the list and you'll be free to post. Try to keep to a chronological posting order so we all get a fair turn to reply.
Also, since I'm not sure FOXX is back yet, if Quietpaw wants to tag along, I don't mind having her under Blacktail's care for the time being. Just send me a message if there is a spot still open and you want to come along.
REMEMBER! YOU MUST TAKE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN THIS THREAD TO RECEIVE THE REWARDS!
The list: Geckostar (leading) Blacktail Wolfeye OPEN OPEN
-----------------------
The heat of Greenleaf was in full-force this day. Despite having short fur, the deputy felt like he was melting. Each step took too effort, and having an empty belly didn't help. He had no energy today. It had taken all he had just to get motivated enough to scout around the camp for cats to join in the hunting patrol Geckostar was leading. A morning nap in the relative cool of his den, listening to the small ripple of waves lapping against the stream banks near the camp had lulled him into a deep sleep. When Geckostar had woke him with a call announcing the start of the patrol, he'd grumbled and nearly bowled a younger warrior down when he tripped on his way out into the sun. Unbecoming of a deputy, and he still felt the sting of embarrassment pricking his pelt.
Now, as he followed along a few mouse-tail-lengths behind his leader, Blacktail kept his ears perked for signs of prey. Though what he really wanted was to come across a large stream where he could search for frogs. With the river still blocked, fish were becoming harder to find in the shallows, and even the frogs didn't sing as much as they used to. He missed the tell-tale splash that would lead him to one bobbing at the surface, just waiting for him to catch. Even a turtle would be welcomed at this point, though he wasn't sure how he'd get through that tough shell. Maybe he'd enlist a few ThunderClan cats to climb the trees and drop them onto rocks. The idea made him purr with amusement. Cats in the trees like they were birds; how ridiculous.
A rustle under a patch of flowers caught his attention. He froze, tail erect over his back. Twitching an ear toward the sound so Geckostar would know what he was up to, Blacktail listed away from the patrol, keeping his body low to the ground. The tom lifted his large paws, careful to avoid the twigs and rocks on the marshy ground, and slunk along silent as a snake. He paused, maw opening enough to taste the air. The scent of water vole encouraged him and soon he found a little hole crafted from the taller grass in the meadow. He sniffed around the edges, knowing his quarry wasn't far from it's hole. Creeping along, his sharp eyes picked out movement and he bunched the muscles in his hind legs. Rear end wiggling from the anticipation, the tom sprung! He was down on the rodent before it had time to squeal, and was quickly dispatched with a sharp bite. It disappointed him when he got a good look at it. He'd caught plumper voles before. Never-the-less, the cat picked it up and carried it back to the others. When he returned to the patrol, he dug a shallow hole and dropped his catch into it; scraping earth over it to keep it safe until they came back this way. Water vole wasn't his favorite by far, but it would feed one of his clanmates, and that knowledge made him glow with pride. Some cat's stomach would be full tonight. That was a rarity for RiverClan as of late..

The young leader was wary today. Nervous. Too much tension had been building up among the clans lately, and he was having a hard time dealing with it. It didn't help that the beavers continued to build their nests upon the river. It was their main food source.. What were they supposed to do? He'd spent so much energy and time worrying about the beavers that he had been carried away from the real problems. They were still lacking food. So, he rallied a hunting patrol for himself, Blacktail, Wolfeye and a few of the other great hunters in the clan. It would finally allow them to be a bit lenient with their prey. Besides, if they were going to fight off the beavers, they would need to be healthy. Geckostar was mostly worried about Redstorm.. He was still so weak. It was obvious from his fur, and the way you could see his bones through it. It still made Geckostar sad. But then again, that's why this patrol was scheduled.
The striped cat looked over to the patrol, noticing Blacktail had already began. He gave a short nod, followed by a meow. "I'm going down to the Thunderclan border. Hopefully we can find some fish" he meowed nervously, obviously more worried about the Thunderclan border than the lack of fish. "Never helps to check" he added, more to himself than anything. The leader gave another awkward nod before padding off over the hill and down to the river, where the Thunderclan and Riverclan border was made. As expected the river was a bit dull, sure there was a couple fish.. but not enough. Not as much as usual. The beavers were slowly becoming a priority. Yet still, the leader couldn't stop wondering about was going on across the border. A Thunderclan patrol had just passed through, he could smell it, but besides that, what were they doing? Was the clan in complete chaos, or were they finally getting in order again?
Geckostar stopped thinking briefly and focused on the water. The silver fish shimmering through the water were numbered and small. Still, any prey was good prey. The young leader leaned in and waited patiently. It was a Riverclan talent.. He was almost positive none of the other clans were educated in this skill. It made him slightly proud. As expected his patience payed off as a slim fish swam lazily past his paw and as quick as a rabbit, Geckostar slashed through the water and swiped the fish straight out of the water. It lay on the warm sand and flopped up and down annoyingly. The tabby smiled and nodded his head, waiting patiently for another fish to swim his way. | |

● prose | dialog | words: 569 | tagged: none ● Blacktail waved his tail farewell, "good luck, Geckostar." The tom went back to sniffing around, his mouth open while he searched for any trace scents across his tongue. He found nothing on the wind. Discouraged but not out, he made his way toward a shallow stream. After scanning the water for a sharp reflection of shiny scales and finding naught, he purposefully slammed the water with his forepaw. What may look like an act of frustration was actually a clever way to scare up what he was really after. But no splashes echoed the original. Now he felt true frustration boil in his blood. No tasty, soft frogs to take home as a prize. Not even that turtle he was musing about. He'd be lucky to find a water beetle with the water so low.
All because of those beasts upstream. Staring down at the thin layer of water rippling around his paw, Blacktail felt his hackles rise. Soon, his clanmates would set out to clear up the stream. He knew this would happen eventually if it didn't clear up on it's own. Of course, he'd imagined he'd be one of the cats. A chance to sink his claws into the beavers, pull apart whatever was in the way of the precious water. A chance at the glory of being one of the warriors who saved RiverClan. Instead, he would be sitting in the camp, giving orders like a good deputy. He'd had a nap after being told the news, and during that time, he had time to think. They'd be leaving at Sunrise, just when he'd be setting out with the dawn patrol.
Pulling his paw away from the stream, the tom licked it clean, trying to clear his mind. Doubling back, he watched Wolfeye scrape earth over her catch. A surge of pride at his former apprentice's kill, whatever it was she found, was quickly replaced by regret. He hadn't been the most patient and understanding cat earlier that day. Of course, he had felt cornered. Caught when he was vulnerable, by two cats actually. A good deputy should be strong, free of.. Whatever it was he had felt when he stood there during the meeting. But that was just an excuse, and not a very good one. He'd snapped at Wolfeye when all she wanted was to help. At least he was respectful with Quietpaw; he'd hate to have insulted two cats instead of the one. It was bad enough he had to avoid the gray warrior, only to have her in a hunting patrol with him. He hadn't chosen the cats; that was Geckostar's doing. He was leading this patrol, and it only made sense that he'd choose a cat like her. She was a good hunter.
He paused, looking a bit like a mouse caught out in the open. Forcing his fur to lie flat, and his breathing to slow, he stepped up to her. He tried to keep his voice friendly and upbeat. "Good find. Not that I expect any less from my apprentice." He flinched inwardly. "Not that- I mean." He scrunched up part of his face in frustration. "I have a way with words today, don't I?" He said dryly. "Wolfeye, care to work together? Two pairs of eyes may find something one will miss." 'Hopefully I won't make myself look more like a mousebrain than I already do,' he added silently.

Unfortunately, the small streak of luck that came Geckostar's way was now gone. He stood patiently waiting and waiting, but nothing worth catching came his way. At least the single fish he had was a decent size. But it wouldn't be enough. It would never be enough until they cleared the beavers. He just couldn't seem to let that thought slip from his mind. It was like a tick stuck in his fur. It could never seem to leave. He couldn't get it out no matter how hard he scratched or licked. It was impossible. It wouldn't be clear from his mind until they were clear from the river.
The leader bent down and picked up his fish, letting the dying thing sit clasped between his jaws. He trotted back to where the patrol was and saw Wolfeye and Blacktail in view. Were they.. Hunting together? Odd. Geckostar wasn't sure if he wanted to interrupt or not. Maybe they were a thing? A relationship of sorts. Unsure, the leader decided to let his deputy stay with Wolfeye. He padded over to a small patch of grass and simply dropped his fish before turning and padding off, deeper into a small reedy area. Hoping he would find something better, the leader dropped down into his terrible hunting crouch. He never did have a knack for hunting. He was more of a fighter, even though he disliked that as well. Sure, he would fight if he had to, but never just to prove his strength. He knew his strength and so did the cats of the forest.
The leader crept along the territory, hidden by the reeds. He was hoping to come upon a mouse or two, but as of now he was having no luck. Momens passed, and there was still nothing.. Until... The small squeaking and sounds of a vole creeping through the watery forest floor. Easily picking up the location of the vole, Geckostar crept closer and closer. Everything was ordered perfectly. He thought he had it! That's when he completely ruined the spring forward. The leader, making a bit of a fool of himself, lunged forward and planted himself right into the mud. The tabby couldn't help but laugh at himself, shaking his head as he lay sprawled out into the mud. Geckostar let out a small grunt and rose to his paws, hoping Blacktail nor Wolfeye were close enough to notice. Geckostar laughed lightly to himself, and stalked further into the reeds to continue his mission.

[/b] She said nodding. He had a point in terms of hunting. Two pairs of eyes were better then one. She quietly stalked back toward the river and spotted some more fish further out. "Here, I'll swim out there and try to drive them toward the shallows. Then you can swipe them right out." She grinned and began to quietly wade into the water. These fish looked much bigger then the minnows she had gotten. Although, not as big as she hoped.[/font][/ul]

Blacktail ● Deputy of RiverClan ● prose | dialog ● The mournful trill of a song bird turned his attention toward the pine forest that ShadowClan called home. He watched quietly, eyes scanning the tree tops, before he pulled his gaze back on the gray she-cat. His sensitive ears picked up the faint pawsteps of another cat. He glanced sideways, only seeing the tip of a banded tail disappearing in the reeds. Geckostar, he guessed. Maybe the tom got lucky and stashed a pile of fish in those reeds. Yeah, and mice will start growing on trees. He fought hard not to raise a lip. Fox-hearted beavers and their dams.
The deputy fixed Wolfeye in his pale green gaze. Her soft fur, rippling in the sunlight. Still shiny, even without a full belly. How like Wolfeye that was. He remembered how she once was and how happy she seemed to be to have some cat speak up for her those moons ago. There were days when he wondered why he had volunteered to be her mentor. Perhaps he had just wanted an apprentice. He couldn't become a leader unless he played his part in teaching a young cat. And now he was deputy. Was Wolfeye just a means to an end?
Had he been alone, the tom would have cursed at himself. As it was, he felt himself grow hot under his pelt for even thinking such a thing. He'd watched her with her first mentor. She'd been so insecure. Losing her mentor hadn't helped her confidence. Of course the cat had stepped up to the plate. He hadn't even considered what he needed, watching her life fall apart as she sat silently by the apprentice den. There was a pull, that day, that brought him to step across to her and lay his tail over her shoulders.
And now, StarClan look at her. She was a confident, well-adjusted clan cat. He didn't even think anyone remembered she wasn't born in RiverClan. Her fur was as shiny and slick as any of their clanmates, and she swam just as good as he did. Probably better. Blacktail felt another surge of pride as she stepped out into the shallows. He followed, taking his place on the bank. "Ready when you are," he whispered as he poised himself to strike.
