● prose | dialog | words: 507 | tagged: @clovershine @rookclaw @crowpaw ● The clear, bright sliver of moon filtered down through the gaps in the canopy of the forest. Small patches of silver light shone off the bracken and ferns, catching the blazing red pelt of the cat who hurried along below. Stepping in and out of the shadows, the tom rushed over the rotted leaves and soft grasses until he came to the tree-line. Despite being as close to the Moonpool as ThunderClan had the luxury of being, the older cat had chewed down several shoots of chamomile to keep his strength up for the trip.
Now, as he bounded across the scent line into WindClan and up toward the stream, he felt lively again. Young again, stretching his legs when he came to a rest beside the pretty tortoiseshell. He waved his tail in greeting, arching his back before sitting a fox-tail length away from her. He looked back toward WindClan, heart aching. How much of that was his fault? He'd seen the danger in Littlestar, but remained silent. Oh sweet StarClan, how many opportunities he'd had to step up and tell Badgerstrike. Or at least, mention it in passing with one of the warriors and allowed gossip to do the job for him. Instead, fear and pride had kept his mouth shut and now look what his folly had caused.
He could hardly believe it, even being born a kittypet, the idea of killing kits was alien. Those lives snuffed out, because of him. He'd visited StarClan a few times since, and every time, he's worried that they would take away his role in the clan. Cast him away, shun him, like they had with Littlestar those few moons ago. At least, they were free from the crazy she-cat. She died in a pool of her own blood, and to be frank, good riddance to her. ThunderClan was better off now with Badgerstar running things. Though there was something about the newest leader that made Brokenface worry. Lack of confidence maybe? Either way, StarClan had accepted her. So would he. And ThunderClan would just have to deal with it.
As he sat there in silence with Poppycloud, the tom felt a shiver roll up his spine. The cat turned his head slightly to the left, not wanting to look like a paranoid kit. For the briefest of moments, a pair of yellow eyes glared out at him from the shadows. His pelt fluffed up, but after he blinked, they'd gone. Remembering Poppycloud, the medicine cat licked at his chest to smooth down the fur and make it look like he was taking the time to groom rather than his being afraid of his own shadow. Idiot.
After some time of waiting, he turned to the she-cat. "You'd think we were waiting for Leafbare at this rate," he growled. How hard was it for all the cats to be here on time? It would be daybreak before they'd get to the pool, and he was getting sleepy with the chamomile working it's calming effects through his body.  |

Happy Half-Moon, everybody! words: 350  | The cats of StarClan fluttered in the sky in the form of silverpelt, surrounding the silver moon that illuminated the sky. It made Shadowberry wonder if Littlestar was up there. How would mother react to her being among the brightest spirits of the golden-hearted warriors that deserved to be there? It was something that had been on the tortoiseshell's mind for what seemed like forever and a day, and it was something she didn't want to ignore.
Perhaps she'll tell me tonight. The night of the half moon. The thing that was keeping her alive. After that Gathering...To put it smoothly, she tried to avoid a conversation about it. But she couldn't avoid the truth, never. If she was a warrior, she'd be dead by now. Not because she was weak. It was because she wouldn't be able to handle the war. And she wouldn't have a say in it.
But she did.
Shadowberry sprinted across the territories. She'd have to come from the other side of the lake, but at least it mean that she could swim, the thing she was built for. But it was only for a moment, as she had already arrived. Not late, by any chance. If there was one thing about Shadowberry, she was never late. Not ever never. It was either early or on time.
Her sweet, thick scent of sharp herbs and honey made her appearance that bit more graceful as she stepped carefully towards Brokenface and Poppycloud. Her long, soft, tortoiseshell-and-white fur wafting in a warm breeze, her golden eyes shining, her head tilting ever so slightly and her half smile appearing on her muzzle was a hard act to follow in a beauty contest.
Shadowberry took after her mother in appearance, making her a very attractive she cat. She was slim, yet muscled and tall. And what's best is the fact she could easily seduce a nice tom into being her friend, but surely it wouldn't come in useful...Or would it?
"Poppycloud, Brokenface." She dipped her head in a polite greeting. "How are things going?" Every day should be a new day.

● prose | dialog | words: 557 | tagged: @clovershine ● When a gentle breeze ruffled his fur, the fiery tom closed his eyes. Feeling the air swirl around him, his mind began to wander. He remembered, about twenty or so moons ago, when he had a kit in his den. It had been the dead of Leaf-bare, and his supplies had been hit hard by frost and poor handling on his part as well as on the part of a bumbling young cat who had hopes of apprenticing to him. He may have succeeded, if only he hadn't come down with greencough like the kit. It quickly became whitecough, and without his herbs, Brokenface saw many cats leave the clan to hunt with StarClan. If it hadn't been for that lucky happenstance when he found a patch of catmint that survived under a log up near the abandoned twoleg nest, he wondered how many of his clanmantes he would have lost. The faces of those who weren't so lucky danced in his mind. The kit, his apprentice, those three warriors who had such promise. A new scent rescued the old cat from his memories.
It washed over him gently, and he recognized the tang of feverfew on her. It reminded him that his own store of that herb was running low. If the elders started complaining about aches, as they often did, it'd be best to have some at the ready. He made a mental note to ask Shadowberry if he could have some when it was more appropriate to talk about. Maybe she'd take a trade for juniper berries. He had a good harvest of that this moon; the cleft was a tad too full of them rolling about. Opening his eyes, he fixed his copper stare on the newest cat to join the circle. It was almost funny, in a cruel way. Two beautiful she-cats, and here he sat, an old tom with an ugly face. How humorous StarClan could be.
The ginger cat twitched an ear at her, acknowledging her arrival. His short jaw parted, "prey is running well in ThunderClan, and so have my harvests." Mostly. He was about to ask if the she-cat had seen Rookclaw on her way here, when Poppycloud spoke up. He held his tongue as she rose and padded away. Glancing back to Shadowberry, he stood to follow. After nodding politely to the she-cat, he turned his eyes back out over ThunderClan's territory. Just beyond familiar ground, lie ShadowClan. It wasn't all that far, closer to the Moonpool than RiverClan surely. So where, in StarClan's behind, was that medicine cat? Shaking his square head, the tom turned and padded after Poppycloud.
Soon, his paws felt the soft grooves in the rock as he ascended to the sacred gathering place. Who would have thought this puddle would have such an impact on him? Had he still been a kittypet, he would have laughed at the sight of cats stooping over the edge to talk to their ancestors. But now, that's all the could think about doing. Brokenface hurried over to the sparkling water, touched by moonlight, and took a few quick laps with his tongue. The cold water drizzled down his throat as the cat tucked his legs under him. Pulling his tail around his side, he rested his head down on his paws and drifted off...

I figured I would end this post here. After you both post, I'll post with his dream, since it's going to be a long one. Also, are you able to darken Shadowberry's font color just a tad, Clover? It's a beautiful table, but it's hard for me to read. ^-^; |

[/b] Poppycloud whispered softly. "I'm so sorry... You were taken far too soon. I..." Jaystar had risen her tail and the medicine cat quickly shut her mouth. "This was not your doing, Poppycloud, nor any of WindClans." Her voice almost sounded as broken as she looked. I am not the first cat to have all of my lives lost at once. Poppycloud blinked at that statement. There was another leader who had all nine lives ripped from them at once? She quickly shook her head and opened her mouth to speak again, but Jaystar silenced her again. "Littlestar is not gone from the lake, Poppycloud. Her presence is still alive." The leader spoke. "Wha... what? But Littlestar died... that one night!" The medicine cats eyes became wide. "She is alive in the form of another. She must be stopped or WindClan will be lost.""Who? Was she that fox?" Poppycloud felt a shiver run up her spine, and felt like some cat was ripping at her pelt, but Jaystar was silent. Slowly, the leader had begun to fade away as a red light began to overtake her surroundings. "Jaystar! Wait!" The she-cat attempted to chase after the fading leader, but it was in vain. She crouched down and shut her eyes tight. Any darkness was better then seeing the forest around her fade into a deep crimson red, like the color of blood. Finally, she awoke. The half-moon had already vanished from the sky and the stars were fading out as the sun made it way over the horizon. That was exactly the kind of dream she didn't want to have. She settled her fur down and glanced over at Brokenface, awaiting for when he would awaken from his dream. [/font][/ul] |

His eyes opened in a familiar meadow laced with wildflowers. Eerie birdsong filled the air, though when the medicine cat called out, it grew silent. Put off by this, he took only a few steps through the grass before a cat appeared in the distance and raced toward him. He paused, raising his eyes to greet the StarClan warrior. But as the cat got closer, Brokenface furrowed his brow. "Aspencloud?"
Aspencloud was no mere warrior. He had once served as a medicine cat, but not for ThunderClan. The ginger tom flicked his tail. "Rookclaw didn't meet us at the stream. Where is he?" The StarClan cat stood a fox tail-length away from the medicine cat. There was something in his eyes that chilled Brokenface to his core. "Aspencloud, where is he?" Silence rewarded him. Frustrated now, he took a step toward the ghostly cat who, in turn, shot him a sudden glare that stopped him in his tracks. His copper eyes went wide. The hostility that the former ShadowClan cat was harboring rolled off him like waves cresting the lake shore. Brokenface took a step back, now unsure if he was in the right dream.
The other cat seemed to sense this, or perhaps StarClan has the ability to read minds, because he calmed himself. As his fur began to lie flat, he lowered his head as a sign of apology. "Brokenface. You must bring what I'm about to tell you directly to Eaglestar." The tom clicked his tongue, "No, it's Rookclaw's job to carry messages to ShadowClan. My duty is to ThunderClan." Aspencloud hardened his eyes again. "Your duty is to StarClan. Your duty is to me. Just," he seemed to plead. "Just tell him, please? Tell him that we were wrong. StarClan is wrong. So many of us are too proud to see beyond our own noses."
Brokenface felt his hackles rise. "What do you mean, 'too proud'. What's going-" "We are losing control," the dead cat interrupted. The air felt chilly, and the medicine cat couldn't wrap his mind around what he was hearing enough to ask any more questions. Aspencloud hissed, startling him. "Darkness is coming, and ShadowClan MUST be ready to fight it. Tell him. Tell Eaglestar! TELL HIM!" The StarClan cat faded away like mist before Brokenface's very eyes, leaving him sitting there in shock. His paws felt frozen to the ground, like if he moved, they'd shatter painfully away to bloody stumps there on the grass. It took far too long before he realized he was no longer alone.
Another cat stepped from the glow of the sun. His fur shone so brightly, it felt like a cruel joke after what he'd just went through. Brokenface could only stare into the eyes of the cat he'd known well. "Brokenface, I'm sorry I kept you waiting. I.. I don't have long." He hesitated, looking back over his shoulder as if he expected an attack. "How is Badgerstar?" Brokenface blinked. "She's fine, Rowanstar. Can't you see that from up here?" Rowanstar, the leader of ThunderClan before Littlestar's reign, turned and faced the medicine cat again. His eyes looked worried, and the tom couldn't help but notice how his whiskers kept twitching. Anxious? Why was StarClan so freaked out? They looked like rabbits caught out in the open by WindClan warriors. These were their ancestors? 'Well, not my ancestors', he thought to himself. He'd been born a kittypet.
"There's a lot of things we can't see, Brokenface. You'd be surprised." The tom stood there, watching him. "Badgerstar isn't ready to be a leader. Not the way she is now." That broke through Brokenface's stupor. At once, he bristled. "What? How mousebrained are you StarClan cats? You were the ones that gave her the nine lives! Or have you forgotten so soon?" Rowanstar rounded on him, his pelt bristled like Brokenface's. "Watch yourself, Brokenface!"
But the ginger tom didn't back down. "No, you watch yourself, Rowanstar! First Aspencloud comes running by, spouting things about StarClan losing their acorns, and now you sit here telling me ThunderClan's leader shouldn't be leader? What do you expect-" "Wait, Aspencloud?" Being interrupted a second time nearly made the medicine cat fly at Rowanstar, but he dug his claws into the soil instead. "Aspencloud came to see you? Why?" Brokenface forced his fur to lie flat. "It doesn't matter. Why do you think Badgerstar shouldn't be leader?"
Rowanstar sat back, seeing the change in the tom and likely trying to keep things civil. "It's not that she shouldn't be leader, it's just that she's too.. Rash. Her temper will only ignite the tension between ThunderClan and WindClan. It will look bad on your clan, on our clan, if another leader loses themselves. ThunderClan may need to find a cat more capable if they hope to-" "Noted. But for now, Badgerstar IS in charge."
The StarClan warrior glared at him, but changed the subject. 'Wise, old one.' "There's something else I need to warn you about, Brokenface. And I really need you to listen. Littlestar isn't in the Place With No Stars, nor is she here with us in StarClan." The ThunderClan cat perked his ears. "Where is she then?" When Rowanstar locked eyes with him, an intense shroud of dread draped over him. He knew, in the back of his mind, he knew where she was. And yet, as he sat there, he practically prayed he was wrong. "We have reason to believe that Littlestar never left the lake." His heart nearly stopped. "No." He wasn't even paying attention when Rowanstar began to fade, much like Aspencloud had. All around him, the meadow turned dark until he was blinking awake by the edge of the pool.
The sun was pink on the horizon when he glanced sideways to see Poppycloud watching him. Getting up, he stretched his legs an arched his back, his joints popping rather nicely. For a moment, as he stood beside the calm Moonpool, he forgot the ominous warnings he'd received from two StarClan warriors that night. Doing his best to look calm in front of the other she-cats, he nodded to Poppycloud. "Excuse me.. I need to leave right away." Instead of the customary return to the territories together, Brokenface didn't wait for the other medicine cats to follow him as he rushed down the smooth steps and raced toward the forest under the new-dawn light. He would cross through ThunderClan, but that wasn't his first destination this morning. He had other business that needed to be tended to first; he had to see Eaglestar.
