[presto] words: 627 muse: strong tagged: adderfrost@path[/presto] Lotuspaw ● Apprentice of ShadowClan ● prose | dialog ● Sunhigh was brutal. The sparse needles of the pine trees did little to block out the harsh rays that was quickly over-heating one of ShadowClan's apprentices. That apprentice slowed, trailing behind the border patrol. Her belly grumbled, and so did she. The older warriors had been kind enough to offer her a quick bite to eat before they headed out, but now she was spent. Her tail quivering, she watched from the brush as the pelts of her clanmates disappeared from view. No cat could fault her if she decided to hunt for the clan, and she'd turn heads when she carried home the largest, most plump squirrel the forest ever had. Maybe they'd make her a warrior right on the spot! The idea made her paws tingle, and little Lotuspaw felt a burst of energy as she padded through the undergrowth with her tail sticking straight up.
The pale tabby sniffed around the roots of a spruce, scenting mouse droppings. The young cat pressed on, darting her paw in between the gaps of the roots and under the leaf litter, looking for something to bring home. Inexperienced as she was, she only managed to kick up dirt and scare off a would-be meal of a shrew that dove into it's den and away from her. If she'd taken the time, the she-cat would notice the mouse droppings were cold and hard and smelled like dirt and leaves. They were old; the mice long gone. And now the shrew she hadn't noticed in her excitement. The cat flicked her whiskers and bounded away.
Her paws brought her within sight of a place for twolegs. She pulled her silver ears back, taking a bouncing step toward it. The cat peeked over her shoulder before placing a paw delicately on the path. She lifted her paw, looking at her pad for a moment, and bringing it up to her muzzle for a few quick licks. The taste was most foul, and she made a face at it. A scratching sound caught her interest. Thunderpath forgotten, the apprentice perked her ears toward the noise and slowly started forward. Narrowing her eyes, she crept closer, her nose wiggling as the scent of mouse made her mouth water.
Remembering a past lesson, she lowered her body; belly flat against the ground. Pulling herself forward, she came tantalizingly close before her inexperience mucked up her technique. Her belly fur dragged across a twig, which slammed into a bed of fallen pine needles, sending up a clamor that sent the mouse scurrying. With a curse, the cat shot forward in hot pursuit. She was fast. The mouse was faster. It shot up a fallen log. She followed, hot on it's trail. Her rumbling belly sounded in her ears as the hungry cat sliced the air with her claws. She caught soft bark and only the tip of the mouse's rump. It stumbled, but tore off again. Partly hopping up on the log, she turned her midsection and pushed off with her hind legs. The move was surprisingly effective, as she nearly landed on top of her quarry.
Her paw held down it's tail, but with a squeak and a sharp bite to one of her toes, the rodent got free. The little cat yowled her pain, but remained loyal to the hunt. Together, they cleared several fox-lengths. She reached out again, nearly taking it in her claws, when a sudden musky scent assaulted her nose. With a squeal, she skid to a stop, hoping backward over the invisible border. Lotuspaw whimpered. Her paw hurt; tiny drops of blood stained the fur, and now her mouse was in another clan's territory. A territory she'd nearly barged right into. The cat lashed her tail in frustration.

This green-leaf all the clans could consider themselves lucky - excepting RiverClan, of course. Prey was so abundant they practically leapt right into your paws, unless you were an inept apprentice. Adderfrost had decided to go on a hunting trip in the Southern part of the ShadowClan territory, thinking she might as well take advantage of the ripe opportunities. Purely solo, of course. Like she usually worked. She sauntered out of the camp and into the dnse darkness of the forest, where the sunlight struggled to filter in.
As she headed in the general direction of RiverClan territory, she wondered how they were faring prey-wise. They were probably plump on their fish, sunning themselves on the lake shore. She had heard no news of RiverClan since the most recent gathering (a rather eventful one, she dryly remembered), but she assumed this was probably true. Addderfrost opened her jaws to taste the air, tracing a faint whiff of mouse. It wasn't strong, yet not quite stale.
She carefully followed the scent, keeping low and sliding her paws forward, arching her belly right above the ground to avoid brushing up against sticks. There it was - nibbling on an acorn. Adderfrost steadied her tail , about to take a leap when a small blur shot past her just a few tail lengths away. The mouse, alerted by the shaking of bushes, darted away and into the thicket. Adderfrost sat up with frustration. She had almost had it, too. Who was that, anyway? After a quick check of the air, Adderfrost identified Lotuspaw's scent. What in the world could she be running so fast from? She thought grumpily. Or toward? Now that her curiosity had been pricked (and besides, running that fast never meant any good), she got up from her crouch and picked her way through the undergrowth, following Lotuspaw's scent.
Adderfrost took her time, padding foward at a leisurely speed. She was in no hurry. This was just killing time until she felt like pursuing another mouse. As she continued to drawer closer to the small thunderpath, however, without a single sighting of Lotuspaw, she began to feel a prickle of worry mixed with annoyance. She began to pick up the pace, trotting forward briskly. She finally saw Lotuspaw ahead of her, looking frustrated and standing right at the edge of the thunderpath. On the RiverClan side. "Lotuspaw!" Adderfrost hissed. She wasn't sure if she had heard, so she stepped out from the bushes and darted across the thunderpath to the small apprentice. "What in StarClan's name are you doing?" She demanded. The last thing they needed was for a RiverClan cat to come along and catch the both of them.

The blue grey tom had been going along the border between Shadowclan and Thunderclan. It wasn't a bad thing, and the young tom couldn't think of anything best to do to help watch the clan borders and probably mark the scents. This wasn't a hard task, and Seapaw had been out at least once to see it with a warrior before, knowing how it was done, and that he had to be careful near the small thunderpath. It was an interesting path, and Seapaw couldn't help but wonder what the big deal was with it for the most part, but he did listen to the fact that he knew that it wasn't a good idea to cross it. He'd been taking his time, figuring he'd also take the time to try hunting out, knowing it would be good to bring back some prey for the clan. The idea to do this with little experience was his decision, that and the fact that he didn't really have any actual experience doing so.
It was at this point, that Seapaw had noticed the scent of another animal, a shrew that he soon noticed a little ways in front of him. Crouching down to where his belly was close to the ground, he crept forward at the best he could, but it didn't take long before something caught both his attention and that of the shrews. It soon bolted, leaving Seapaw to chase after it slightly, but stopping. Whatever the noise was, it came from closer to the small Thunderpath, tilting his head a little as he tried to find the exact pinpoint of where it was. It was hard to tell, but it seemed to be moving quick, whatever it is. Taking a second glance behind him, Seapaw decided to take the chance to go see what it was, going in the direction towards the path.
It didn't take long before Seapaw found the spot where it was from, noticing the other cat on the border, pretty close to the Thunderclan side instead of the Shadowclan side. This was unexpected, and Seapaw knew that the other cat shouldn't be there, and she did smell a lot like Shadowclan. He hid in the shadows of the brush where he was at, not exactly knowing what to do but knew he had to try something to get her to leave. She didn't need to be there, and go back, and at least the cat that was on the other side of the path had the right idea. It didn't take long before Seapaw decided that he should go over and tell her to leave, it was better off that she would get off Thunderclan territory.
"Its best if you get off Thunderclan territory. Your not supposed to be here."

[presto] words420 museLacking a bit. notesThis thread has been moved to the TC/SC border. Please disregard any references to RC. Sorry to confuse anyone! taggedadderfrost@path[/presto] Lotuspaw ● Apprentice of ShadowClan ● prose | dialog ● The young cat danced in place, lifting and setting down her front paws one after the other. The mouse, her mouse was right there! She could see it hiding under a leaf by a tree. But the border was not even half a mousetail length in front of her. The musky scent of ThunderClan cats was heavy in the air, and it was quickly making her dizzy. She started to back away, head clearing as she inhaled fresh air. A rustle under the tree made her pelt stand on end again. She eyed where the tiny brown thing was hiding, her teeth bared.
So what if it was on their side, it was a ShadowClan mouse! A good catch to show her brother that she was ready to be a warrior! The youngest warrior in the clan. The apprentice looked over her shoulder, scenting cautiously, before darting forward. She didn't even make it more than a step into enemy territory before she heard a rush of pawsteps behind her. Hair standing on end, she twisted her body and stared wide-eyed into the face of Adderfrost. Her pale tail lashed behind her as she fumbled for words. Adderfrost looked so angry.
All she wanted was that mouse. That's it! Something to show her worth, something to make up for all the meals she took from her clan; the second helpings she often enjoyed. Anything to boost the offering of fresh-kill so her conscience didn't stress her out. But now this happened. With the warrior here, she'd never get to bag that mouse. Unless she could appeal to Adderfrost's sense of duty to providing for their clan.
Trying to relax, the she-cat spoke with a slight quiver in her voice. "I was chasing a mouse! It's a ShadowClan mouse. I was going to get it and bring it home for the clan." All true, and she was starting to feel better until a second scent wafted toward her. With a quiet groan, she turned her head in time to see a gray cat. A ThunderClan cat, an apprentice by his size. She hadn't attended a gathering yet, so she had no idea who he was. Taking a small step backward, she eyed him warily. Was he alone, or was there a whole patrol ready to swoop down on them? "I-I want my mouse. It belongs to ShadowClan.." She tried to stand her ground, her paws trembling. With Adderfrost's intimidating presence, and the threat of more enemy cats, Lotuspaw was seriously on edge.

Adderfrost, eyes seething and tail lashing in anger, knew she must be a scary sight indeed. To Lotuspaw, at least. But she couldn't help it - she knew relations with Thunderclan right now weren't exactly peaceful, and she had been afraid some larger and not so friendly warriors would come across the tiny apprentice and challenge her. Or worst yet, Lotuspaw might've been taken as a spy and might've been dragged to the ThunderClan camp for questioning. Seriously, is it that difficult to refrain from being a mousebrain sometimes? Adderfrost glared at the apprentice, who was staring up at her with round eyes.
"I was chasing a mouse! It's a ShadowClan mouse. I was going to get it and bring it home for the clan." Lotuspaw protested. Adderfrost could tell she was trying to not look so nervous, though her trembling voice was a give away. She rolled her eyes, intending to look unimpressed with Lotuspaw's explanation. (It wasn't hard, given that that was what apprentices always said when caught across the border.) ShadowClan mouse or not, a ThunderClan cat wouldn't give a mousetail. Despite the danger, however, Adderfrost knew Lotuspaw had only meant well, and felt herself soften in spite of herself. But that didn't mean she still wasn't angry with Lotuspaw. Still, Adderfrost stopped lashing her tail so furiously and tried to make her tone sound...well... not so scathing. "ThunderClan cats don't care whose mouse it is," Adderfrost explained. "What they see is a ShadowClan cat on their territory." She sighed and was about to tell Lotuspaw she should go hunting somewhere else when she saw the apprentice's head turn, and followed her gaze.
A small grey cat had silently stepped out from the underbrush. A Thunderclan cat. He still had soft kit fuzz behind his ears, so he probably was an apprentice, too. Great. Just what they needed. In the corner of her eye, Adderfrost saw Lotuspaw take a cautious step backward. The ThunderClan apprentice was tiny - he really was nothing to be scared of in battle. (Okay, all apprentices were pretty tiny to Adderfrost.) But she knew that Lotuspaw probably wasn't scared of just the apprentice; he could very well be part of a nearby border patrol. Adderfrost instinctively felt protective of the ShadowClan apprentice, who was quivering nervously. "It's best if you get off Thunderclan territory. You're not supposed to be here." Adderfrost was a little surprised at the ThunderClan apprentice's relatively peaceful words. She had expected him to launch himself at them, miniscule claws unsheathed. And not because he was a ThunderClan cat, but just because it was an apprentice thing to do. "We were just about to do that," she meowed coolly. Adderfrost realized she probably should sound more apologetic, seeing as they were on his territory. But she really couldn't bring herself to do anything more than give him a brief nod. The last thing she wanted to do was apologize to a scrappy ThunderClan apprentice.

The little apprentice peeped around fearfully, trying to keep calm as she searched the forest behind Seapaw for any more cats. She couldn't see any, but that didn't mean much. As far as she knew, they were in the trees like squirrels. The stories of ThunderClan warriors dropping down on an unsuspecting cat with their claws unsheathed, screaming in your ears, brought her gaze toward the treetops with a light shiver.
She hadn't noticed that she'd backed into Adderfrost until her rump brushed fur. Feeling anxious about being caught by both the warrior and the enemy cat, Lotuspaw blinked up at the she-cat. She was lucky it had been Adderfrost that found her, and not Galestorm. The foul-tempered tom would probably have cuffed her and thrown her to the enemy patrol for being so mousebrained. But that mouse was ShadowClan's! It probably had a den here around the trees and everything. It wasn't fair. It would have made a good catch for her clan, and then she wouldn't have felt bad about getting seconds tonight when every cat headed to bed.
She softly stomped her back paws down, alternating between the two in order. Sitting here between the cats wasn't going to solve anything. The mouse was gone anyway, probably hiding. The apprentice could be doing other, more important things, than arguing. Nibbling her tongue, unsure at first, she finally piped up. "The mouse is yours. Sorry." With one last apologetic smile up at Adderfrost, the pale tabby padded off toward home with her tail dragging along behind her.
adderfrost | 259 | Since Seapaw was deleted last activity check, I figured we could wrap this thread up and move on to a Brackenpaw and Lotuspaw meeting thread. If you want to reply with Adderfrost after I post, that's up to you. If you don't, feel free to let Danish know the thread's done. ^o~

Adderfrost didn't like lingering at the ThunderClan border - it was entirely unnecessary, not to mention a waste of her time. When Lotuspaw blinked up at her and apologized, she had to repress a probably offending sigh of relief. Good. So n more mouse. Fine with her. There were plenty in the forest anyway - Adderfrost would've pointed this out if she hadn't noticed how disappointed Lotuspaw looked. It wasn't that she wasn't trying to be sensitive to others' feelings - never. As if she'd ever do that. But there was no point hassling Lotuspaw any further about it when she had already given up her mouse. The small apprentice was already heading back to the camp, (or away from the border at least ) tail dragging in the dust.
Adderfrost decided to stay at the border a little longer. She didn't really want to catch up with Lotuspaw. Comforting words would probably be expected of her, and she was never in the mood for that. Anyways, whenever she tried to be nice it either ended up sounding forced or sarcastic. (Well...probably cause it was.) After the apprentice had left her line of sight, Adderfrost stood up. Giving the clearing one last glance, she padded off into the shadows of the evergreens. Looks like the mouse got its lucky break today.
( ooc: sounds good, we can end the thread here )
